If you own an adventure food company, you’d think planning meals for a multi-day family hike would be a breeze, right? Well… sort of. We had a great food plan. And then changed it the day before the hike. Classic.
Still, our Overland Track family meal plan ended up being spot-on—lightweight, nutritious, tasty, and (most importantly) approved by our 11-year-old daughter Pippa, who’s also our in-house Campers Pantry taste tester. Here’s what we packed, what we loved, and what vanished first from our food bags.
We’ve linked everything below so you can easily check out the meals and snacks we used on the trail. 🔗
We kept it simple: Oats for the morning breakfast session and split a homemade Campers Pantry mix between the three of us. They were the perfect start to each day. Warm, filling, and not too sweet. Plus, we didn’t feel like we were carrying a brick of breakfast.
Our evening meals were a mix of Campers Pantry classics and sneak peeks from our new flavours (coming soon!). We had:
• A mix of new products to test out which were great.
Since we make our meals low in salt and spice for family friendliness, Emma and I brought a mini salt & pepper container to pep up our plates. It's a Game changer.
We grazed our way through the middle of the day with a mix of easy, no-cook options:
• Shelf-stable Primo salami sticks
• Cup-a-Soups and the odd 2-minute noodle pack for a warm-up on colder days
Snacking is serious business on the trail. Woolies has the most incredible range of health snacks and it's getting bigger every day. Here’s what kept us going between huts:
• Mini chocolate-dipped rice cakes
• FRISP Freeze-Dried Smoothie Drops (check flavour availability)
• Really Fruity Sticks from GoodnessMe
And yes—we brought Campers Pantry Freeze-Dried Ice Cream. Because it’s kind of our thing. Nothing beats a sweet, crunchy dessert with a hot cup of peppermint tea in a hut.
📸 Woolworths - The health snack aisle used to be a shelf. Now it’s a small suburb!
☕️ Hot Drinks
• Morning: Organic drip coffee filters (paper-based so they went in the loo afterwards—don’t judge us)
• Afternoon: Peppermint tea for Mum and Dad, chamomile tea for Pip
All up, we had a great balance of real food, sweet treats, and warm drinks. We didn’t carry too much and we didn’t run out. And no one got hangry—not even once!
Pippa smashed it with her appetite and energy levels. Next time, though? She’s carrying her own snacks. 😉
Stay tuned for our next blog where we unpack the gear that worked (and what didn’t) on this epic family adventure.
