We've been a big fan of Tentipi tipis for camping since we purchased our first canvas tipi for canoe and car camping trips when our daughter Pippa came along ten years ago. As a family of three, having ample open space for sitting, cooking and sleeping was a huge decider. The other factors are quality build and fabrics, size when packed away and ease of setup.
Ready for overnight hikes and introducing our daughter to this, we decided after much research to go for a lightweight backpacking tipi again from Tentipi, the Olivin 2 Combi Light.
The Tentipi Olivin 2 Combi Light is a lightweight and durable tent perfect for backpacking or lightweight camping adventures. With its spacious design, high-quality materials, and easy single pole and six-peg setup, the Tentipi Olivin 2 Combi Light is an excellent choice for anyone looking for an easy setup and lightweight, durable fabrics with a simple but detailed design.
One of the main features of the Tentipi Olivin 2 Combi Light is its unique design. This tent is shaped like a traditional Nordic tipi, which means it has a roomy interior perfect for camping with your family. The tent is made from high-quality and very durable Traillix C fabric, which is approximately 85 g/m2. This rusty red-coloured ripstop-reinforced polyamide fabric is UV-protected and double-sided silicone-coated and is waterproof to stay dry and comfortable even in extreme conditions. There is an adjustable vent at the top and another at ground level for cool, hot air to rise and create airflow. The adjustments for the top vent are made by the cords running down the centre pole, and they auto-reset by the use of a bungee cord on the outside, so you don't have to leave the tent to make any adjustments.
For us, another great feature of the Tentipi Olivin 2 Combi Light is its lightweight and compact design. This tent weighs just 3.4kg which makes it easy to carry for overnight hiking adventures, and packed away is only 50 cm long and 15 cm wide. The tent also has an oversized stuff sack, making it much easier to pack away. Two compression straps on the side of the stuff sack allow you to fold and roll the tent, then compress it to minimise its volume. The tent's ventilation system, similar to our other tipi, helps to keep the interior cool and comfortable, even on hot summer days. A venting system at ground level and the top allows hot air to rise and draw in cool air from the ground to keep things circulating.
Setting up the Tentipi Olivin 2 Combi Light is also very straightforward. The tent has an aluminium centre pole that is easy to assemble and disassemble with a bungee cord snapping it together. Like all other models, the centre fabric guide is placed on the ground with a peg. Then the measure strap is used to locate where each of the six pegs are pushed into the ground. The centre fabric guide is then removed, and the tipi is unfolded on the ground. Each peg is used for each corner strap, the pole is inserted and raised into position, and all the straps are then tightened. It doesn't sound very easy, but it really is simple. Because of these standout features, the tent can be used for winter camping and summer camping. The outer or inner can also be pitched separately from each other as a mosquito net or tarp-style setup. Whether you're camping in the mountains, hiking in the desert, or exploring a rainforest, the Tentipi Olivin 2 Combi Light is up to the task.
Overall, the Tentipi Olivin 2 Combi Light is a fantastic tent perfect for a young family of three like us, a couple doing expedition hiking needing a space to sit out storms and hold all their gear or even a young family of four ready to hit the trail for overnight trips. With its lightweight and compact design of just 3+ kilos, spacious interior with a single pole, and high-quality materials, whether you're looking for a tent for a weekend camping trip or a more extended expedition backpacking trip, the Tentipi Olivin 2 Combi Light is worth considering. We bought our Tentipi tents directly from Sweden, with no Australian distributor.
Above: First time pitching with rocks. We should have just pitched it on the grass in front of the tent platform as the angles were a little bit out of whack.
