Getting stuck is not a good thing. We've spent 7 months on the road travelling remote Australia and strapped to our spare is a cool bit of kit in the form of MAXTRAX recovery gear.
MAXTRAX were invented by Brad McCarthy, an Aussie bloke, who has a passion for adventure and exploring Australia by 4WD. Manufactured in Australia the nylon plastic is a composite type which provides stiffness, longevity as well as being lightweight. The studs are angled to give your tyres the best grab if angles change. Carry handles are a good size and there are 6 per MAXTRAX. They come in a range of colours as well as super bright orange that makes finding them easier when they are 1 foot under the sand or mud. And they are super easy and straightforward to use. MAXTRAX mounting options are perfect and we used the spare wheel straps that make good use of a dead spot we had on the wagon.
Some of the sand on Fraser Island was the softest we have encountered. Because of this most adventurers would wait for low tide to head out and clock up the km's on the hard sand. We didn't worry about this and travelled during all stages of the tide.
We always took preventative measures (airing down) when hitting the soft stuff and we did bog down in a few places but kept momentum and got through. We do get out of the wagon and check conditions and lines before blasting through blind.
If your a solo adventurer, MAXTRAX are a must if playing in soft sand or mud.
